چکیده

This paper provides evidence of market power in the transportation of ethanol used in reformulated gasoline and alternative transportation fuels. I estimate a reduced form model for railroad route-level prices. My identification strategy instruments for railroad entry, controls for selection and explicitly models capacity constraints. A detailed understanding of this industry is important because U.S. environmental policies seek to substantially expand ethanol use. Evidence of market power may alter the types of policies pursued by lawmakers. I find that ethanol shipment prices are lower for more competitive routes. I also find evidence that railroads price discriminate based on environmental regulation at route destinations. Monopolist prices for shipments to carbon monoxide non-attainment areas are 3% higher than shipments to other destinations. This price premium falls sharply with increased competition. This suggests a perverse result where environmental regulation increases the price of a clean input. ∗I thank Meghan Busse, Stephen Holland, Christopher Knittel, Douglas Miller, David Rapson, Victor Stango, four anonymous referees, and seminar participants at the College of William and Mary, the Colorado School of Mines, Iowa State University, North Carolina State University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of California Energy Institute, the University of California Santa Barbara, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Michigan, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, and the University of Tennessee for helpful discussions. اثرات اصلاح قیمت سوخت مصرفی نیروگاه‌ها بر قیمت برق در بازار تجدیدساختاریافته:رویکرد پویایی سیستمی

Following the rise of the fuels that power plants consume in the deregulated market, an increase in the electricity prices would be expected. This article tries to study the effects of power plants’ fuel prices adjustment on the amount of increase in electricity prices in the market. The components of the deregulated power market were modeled in the systems dynamics method with the aim of findi...

Investigation of injection timing and different fuels on the diesel engine performance and emissions

Start of fuel injection and fuel type are two important factors affecting engine performance and exhaust emissions in internal combustion engines. In the present study, a one-dimensional computational fluid dynamics solution with GT-Power software is used to simulate a six-cylinder diesel engine to study the performance and exhaust emissions with different injection timing and alternative fuels...

Fuels With a High Enthalpy of Evaporation in Si Engine

The increasing use of fuels derived from oil, deepens concern about the fact that non-fossil fuels have to be considered as the fuels of the future. Among the alternatives, hydrogen produced from the abundant sources of water, seems to be one of the best, but it suffers drawbacks with regard to combustion, storage and transportation. The other alternatives are ammonia, produced from unlimited s...

The Relative Impacts of U.S. Bio-Fuel Policies on Fuel-Energy Markets: A Comparative Static Analysis

Rapidly declining gasoline prices from their record high during the summer of 2008, while ethanol prices remained relatively high, made it difficult for many bio-fuel policy modelers to fully explain the impacts of U.S. bio-fuel policies on fuel prices. Using profitmaximization models for blenders, refiners, and distillers, we conduct a comparative static analysis to measure the relative magnit...

The effect of higher fuel price on pollutants emission in Iran

A key aspect of sustainable development in a country is how energy, environment and economic sectors interact. Greenhouse gas emissions and their impacts are among important environmental issues that have been in focus. The increase in the concentration of these gases in atmosphere to levels above the natural level results in global warming, depletion of the Earth’s protective layer against har...
